I've just posted a question but thought I'd tag it here too. My base score (and RAM score ) was 5.2, windows reckoned it would get better with more RAM I upped from 2Gb to 3Gb and the score went down to 4.4???

Personally? I've been around computers for thirty years and this "score" is just hype and noise -- or the more accurate term, FUD: Fear Uncertainty & Doubt that you haven't upgraded to new enough hardware for the future.

My score is for a January 2007 computer that's top-o'-the-line from HP. It has a 100gb drive -- considered good but not great; someone earlier had a higher score for 300gb. Mine has 7200 rpm -- does the 300gb model? Faster rpm's means simulators can load scenery faster, larger drives only can store more of it.

Silly reasoning. Just a toy for fun.

    Hi,

Due to work and life changes and requirement to be mobile I've lost my old Compaq laptop and Evesham PC and swapped the two for the fastest Vista WEI laptop I could find a Dell XPS1710 and so far very impressed (Score and system information below) which I hope helps you with your survey.

     Regards

Seems like it doesnt take into account a dual core chip (e6600 is quite medium-high end). Dunno what I should do for my RAM. Nice to see my graphics are 5.9/5.9 though.

One more thing I need some advice would make much difference if I upgraded for 2.13 to 2.6 in other words from 6400e to a 6600e processor.

It's also possible to lower one's score if background tasks are in RAM. Using the Task Manager, eliminate anything you don't need (iTunes Helper comes to mind), then run the test again. See if the scores go up a notch or two.

Re: What's your Windows Experience Index score? Vote and let us know!

My Windows Experience Index Score is 3.4, I have voted also. The lowest score of 3.4 is from the 3D business and gaming graphics performance. The scores are:

Processor (Calculations per second) =  3.8

Memory (RAM) (Memory operations per second) = 4.4

Graphics (Desktop performance for Aero) = 3.6

Gaming Graphics ( 3D business and gaming graphics performance) = 3.4

Primary Hard Disk ( Disk data transfer rate) = 5.0

I would have to agree that I think these scores can be a bit miss-leading. My subjective experience is that Windows Vista Business Edition runs faster and is much more stable than Windows XP Professional SP2 was on exactly the same hardware. Not only does it boot-up much faster, but programs open faster and run more smoothly than they did under XP Pro SP2.

I'm running Windows Vista Business Edition on a Dell Inspiron 9300 Notebook (originally purchased in April 2005 with XP Pro pre-installed):

CPU - 1.86 GHz Intel Pentium M Processor (533Mhz FSB)

    RAM - 2Gb Dual Channel Kingston Memory (@ 533Mhz)

Graphics - ATi Mobility Radeon X300 graphics adaptor with 128Mb dedicated video RAM

    17" LCD Display at 1920*1200*32

    HDD - Hitachi Travelstar E7K100 (7,200rpm, 100Gb 2.5" HDD)

While this might seem quite an 'old' notebook to be upgrading to Vista, I've found that it works very well and even comes out with a better WEI than some much newer, supposedly 'Vista Capable' Dell Inspiron notebooks that I've worked on upgrading recently!
