Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

I am a Virgin broadband user since their takeover of Telewest, I have had no issues at all in connecting to the internet in fact I had expected problems but as soon as I connected my cable modem it worked straight away.  My modem is a SURFboard SB4100 and is connected through my Ethernet port, I would have thought that if you ring Virgin and threaten to leave they will bend over back wards to keep you and change your modem for free.  As for your msn query again I have had no issues with Hotmail so would guess MSN would work to.

I still do'nt understand why it's not working! Your IP and MAC address are already set through the router, windows pick's this up automatically and configure's it for you, even XP does this the same.

Just a thought but go into the BIOS setup and see if your Ethernet is enabled, it's a long shot but it may be off.

Kaiser I am back on line now. If you don't mind me asking what is my BIOS setup? Sorry to be a pain again. People are suggesting I use a router, now I don't want wireless ( I have a reason for that, a bit complicated to explain, but it is a problem for me) and as there is only one computer in the house  I don't want to have the abilitty for multiple computers so what would a router do for me? and I have just been looking on PC World website there apeears to be different sorts which again I don't understand.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

    Hi All,

Just to let you ALL know that the new pc is up n running.

My son bought a laptop, so we purchased a Linksys wireless broadband router, so he could connect remotely. The ntl/virgin

Ambit modem connects via ethernet to the Linksys and that connects directly via ethernet to the new pc. All is working a dream.

Thanks to all for your advice.

    Darkeyes.

ps Do have another problem though - see seperate post.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

VM have no idea what they are talking about. Now Vista has arrived, they are even more inept, incompetent and rude. Not all I must add, before getting shouted at, but most.

I tried for days to register on the website without using the disc, and all it told me was that "Your browser has issued a request that the registration server has denied"

Then when it did work, it asked for a pin number. Also a serial number which I did not have & which vm told me I only need a pin to register and activate an account. Didnt work.

So, popped in the disc and then it told me I have no ethernet port and cannot continue. Called them, 3 weeks of passing the buck rude man calls back from vm says my account is activated now. Havent got a clue if it is, as I'm using my BT wireless.

Cant use the vm modem, pc's not reading it. Must be a hardware problem with the vm modem, because the BT 2091 is working right now with it through ethernet. Give up on vm.

VM/NTL Havent changed in years. Why ffs does nothing change with this utter useless company.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

I had quite the opposite response from VM they came and gave me the modem etc... but after that it was the same deal no ethernet found, phoned help desk people, they gave me the web address to log on manually, I gave them the mac code from the modem entered my personal account details and was up and running in about ten mins. Although the help desk person was very good in this situation he did also admit that if there were any other problems then their tech people would probably not be that useful as they had not developed much support for Vista yet!!

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

Like doodles, thats what they told me. They have had no training on Vista support. Why not?

But anyway, for some strange reason I decided to give the vm modem another bash. Oddly enough, it started working. I'm on it now. I have a sneaky feeling, it was vm's end and some one forgot to press a button their end.

That said, I wont be calling them on the phone for any help/support. No point. I found certain members 10 times quicker and more helpful on a certain forum half the company hang out in and 'help' angry customers, a vmfest of look how great we are, in my opinion of course, but solved my problem.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

Yes I had a similar problem with the free cable modem supplied by virgin when I upgraded from XP to Vista Premium. I was was given A, D-Link router modem. Link supplied: http://www.dlink.co.uk/archivos/884-116-fichero/D-Link_Driver_Support_Sheet_32.pdf Big Smile

You say that virgin is not compatiable with msn, but I used it and it works ok even with msn live, virgin dont support it because nobody there is familar with it. But since I had my router I ve had no problems, I hope this helps.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

    Hi

I am a long standing Telewest/ VirginMedia  user and are using the original motorola cable modem supplied conected to a Belkin router using rj45 leads. Vista Ultimate connected without any interference from me .

Using the USB connection limites the broadband to one pc my router connects 4 machines sharing the bandwidth, 20mb , if Virginmedia are to be believed.

    Darkeyes:

    Hi All,

I am soon to take delivery of a new pc preloaded with Vista. However I have just learned that Virgin broadband does not support

Vista, and the Ambit cable modem I have does not have a Vista compatible driver, and their site says none are available.

Anybody out there connected to the net with Vista and Virgin? If so I would be grateful to learn what modem and type of connection

    ( usb/ethernet) you have used.

On a different note I read somewhere that Vista is not compatible with msn.com. I find this hard to believe, but worrying, as I log on at msn.com

and my email address is with them.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help or offer advice.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

I'm with them too and have the old modem I got from NTL.  I just put the Cat5 into the NIC and away I went.  No problems at all.

Doesn't help those of you with problems, but it's nice to know that there is one thing working fine on my system.
