Ahead's server's are alway's busy, you should try the mirror link's on the site also, just persevere with it. Use a download manager to get it so it can re-connect, I can never get nero in one go so at least you won't need to keep an eye on it till it downloads.

Glad to hear your up and running. Virgin will be updating there service shortly to give 10mb user's a 20mb connection, hopefully around july.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

Hi I have for the past week been trying to connect my new laptop, which has Windows Vista to by Virgin Media broadband ( formally NTL) it is an ethernet connection and despite trying everything I have been told by various people it will not work. I am a complete computer ignoramus so I do need things explaining in simple words of one syllable. I have tried ringing Virgin only to be told ' I am not trained on Vista' I have E mailed them, had a standard reply which says they will get back to me in 5 days, still waiting. Tried the help page on their website, sends you round in circles. Has anyone any ideas please?

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

It seems that everywhere is ignorant to the fact that people are installing vista as their main OS now, virgin helpdesk soil themselves at the very mention of vista, some have'nt even a clue as to what it even is!

Anyway, onto your problem, firstly what router are you using? Mine is still my telewest Motorola SB5100 (never failed me yet!!) the "various people" who say it will not work are wrong, I am using it as I type. Make sure you have removed all trace of your previous network connection & drivers for whatever you used before, I assume you have a Cat5 RJ45 cable (get a Cat6 if you can, they perform better) plugged from your Ethernet port on the back of your router, which then goes to the Ethernet port in your Laptop, that's all you have to do, windows will pick it up as an Ethernet adapter and set it up for you because it's connecting directly to the network and not needing specific router driver's. Post back your finding's, im sure we can sort it out. :)

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

Kaiser Thanks for your reply, but I am afraid as I said I am a complete computer Dumbo, so you will have to bear with me and explain things more simply for me. Right all I have is a modem, it's an NTL 200 My Ethernet connection goes from that ( A blue cable, I am correct?) to my old computer, plugs in and works no problem. Plug the blue cable in to my new computer and it won't work. That is as far as I know. Sorry to be a **** but I would just like someone to explain to me what is needed to make it work.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

Your Ntl 200 should be good for 10/20MB connection, your cable (can be any colour) should have something like "CAT 5 Patch Cable UTP" or similar written on it. What kind of laptop is it?

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

Kaiser, I can't see anything written on the cable, it is a longer one I bought as the one NTL supplied wasn't long enough. I still have the one NTL supplied and that one does say Cat 5 on it. When I bought this longer one the shop assured me it was the same as the NTL one. My old laptop is a Sony Vaio PCG-K315B and the new one is an Acer Aspire 9301 AWSMi. I know I am thick with computers but I do appreciate your help as I have no one here to help me. Thank you.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

Pat you will have to explain that one to me. All I had was an installation  CD from NTL when I first went online. I installed that in my old computer but everyone has told me I don't need to install it in the new one as it will work automatically.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

No need to apologise jaywit, we all need to start somewhere. According to the specsheet for that particular Acer:

Networking Network adapter - Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g

Which is the same spec as my ECS MB and as we see from the following picture:
The Network adapter shows up as VIA Rhine II fast ethernet adapter. Go into your device manager and see if it has network adapter listed.
To do this in vista goto: Start, Control Panel, System, Device Manager. What does it say for Network adapter?

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

Kaiser I have got the screen up like you show, except I can't get the 3 network adaptors up, just the heading network adaptors. I have tried clicking everything I can to get the sub headings but nothing just the main heading.  ( tearing my hair out)

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

Sorry, ignore the 2 vmware connections (they are for virtual machines) you should only have one connection (the VIA Rhine one) check to see what is there on the working PC, then compare with the laptop Device manager. I won't be back online til tommorow night anyway, working all day tomorow (boo! :( )

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

    Jaywit,

Am not sure if I've read your posts right.  It appears you are trying to connect your new Vista laptop to the NTL modem directly (as opposed to through a router).

I have NTL Broadband at home.  Installed the NTL disk on an old Win ME machine to connect to NTL for the first time, and then put a router in between.  All machines at home connect to the router and not the modem, and hence need no further installations.

If you are connecting your laptop to the NTL modem directly, I understand that you have to install the CD and register - it apparently records your MAC address as an authorised user.  It's possible that the installation CD might not work with Vista, in which case you are best off getting a router and putting it in.  I doubt NTL (or Virgin as they are called now) will have Vista compatible stuff in any hurry.

    Hope this helps.
