    Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

    Hi All,

I am soon to take delivery of a new pc preloaded with Vista. However I have just learned that Virgin broadband does not support

Vista, and the Ambit cable modem I have does not have a Vista compatible driver, and their site says none are available.

Anybody out there connected to the net with Vista and Virgin? If so I would be grateful to learn what modem and type of connection

    ( usb/ethernet) you have used.

On a different note I read somewhere that Vista is not compatible with msn.com. I find this hard to believe, but worrying, as I log on at msn.com

and my email address is with them.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help or offer advice.

Connect via Ethernet rather than USB and you should have no problem.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

Virgin Broadband over cable - I presume you are referring to the old NTL cable broadband.

They have an activation process which require you to install their software on your PC and then register.  This software might not be Vista compatible.

I installed it on a Windows ME PC at home rather than put it on my Vista box.  Subsequently, I put a router between the modem and my PCs - they all worked fine after that.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

Yes it is the old NTL cable broadband lognormalreturn. If I am running just one pc ( the Vista one) then i would have to use the old NTL install disc, which as you say is probably incompatible, so the router would not be of much use? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

You don't need to install their software at all.  If already registered as mentioned just plug the CM via Ethernet not forgetting to power down the CM first.  If you must register just go here for the manual process.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

Toejam is correct.  I am with virgin broadband using an ethernet modem.  You cannot use a USB cable modem at present as virgin (nor the modem manufacturers) have vista drivers yet.  However, if you use an ethernet connection, just plug it all in and it will work - just like that - it did for me!!

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

As with this thread in the XP forums, this is getting more involved than it need be. Darkeyes already has his connection with NTL/Virgin, it is a new pc he's getting. It should be straightforward connecting the modem to ethernet port on the pc.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

As all the above have said if you connect via your ethernet port you will not need driver's. I am ex-Telewest and had issues with the usb connection in vista, it did work but not very well (always dropping out or not starting at all!) You will (should) get the fast ethernet adapter in your devices list like below:

as to alanmil's question of looking for an app to unrar files Winrar works fine in vista why not use that?
