Had an initial problem setting up new Vista laptop, wouldn't connect to internet (Virgin Cable). Asked Windows Connection Wizard to analyze and repair the connection. Voila, Success! Give it a go.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

hi all, having a bit of a mare at the moment and was hoping that someone may be able to help me out. i've just bought a delll inspiron 1501 with windows vista basic for my girlfriend and am trying to connect to our newly installed VM cable connection. the connection is via ethernet cable and is from a Scientific Atlanta modem (the free one you get from Virgin). I have a laptop on XP, which when i plug in the ethernet cable, picks up the cable connection and works fine (am posting from it now). For some reason, when i plug the ethernet cable into the back of the new dell laptop, it recognises that a network is connected, but when i try to open internet explorer, it says that it cannot connect. i've checked that the LAN settings are set to obtain IP address automatically, and am totally at a loss as to what to do next to get it connected. any help would be greatly appreciated guys & girls. am getting some serious agro from my g/f. thanks in advance. Mark

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

i am running vista ultimate on virgin.the connection i use is ethernet.if you are being charged £25 by virgin to install it cancel it and diy.none of the security software that comes with install disc work on vista.

just connect broadband modem via ethernet cable and vista will install its own driver without any work by yourself.hope this helps.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

    Hi Guys

Its easy to install Vista on Virgin.  The disk will moan about a Nic card not installed, so dont use it.

Phone customer support and they will give you an IP address ie 134.2.5.7 (this is not it)  this bypasses the need for the disk and you will have it up and running in minutes. It basically goes through the same operation as the disk would on say an XP machine.

As for connecting the cable fron one pc then another, you have to turn off the modem for about 10 seconds for it to reset the new pc's IP address.

This usually applies when you connect a router as well.

I havent had time to look through all the posts so if it has been solved I apologise

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

    Ah Yes

I have installed quite a few virgin broadband and always had those problems. I did one tonight actually and seen the http for registering in the booklet, it must be something new as you had to fone them b4, for an IP.

Sorry it had been mentioned, it was early and I was in a rush for work

     Take care

    Gus

PS It is a nightmare to do this way its really slow, if you get page cannot be displayed press the "back" button and it will usually carry on  then.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

    Hi,

I was using Virgin (Cable) on XP then bought a new pc with Vista Premium. All I did was plug the ethernet cable in to the port and was connected as normal within seconds. The modem Im using is still the NTL 150.

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

    Dear all,

You sound extremely experienced in this, so I hope somebody out there can suggest something new. Have new Sony Vaio and tried to set up Virgin broadband with ethernet cable (I tried USB adaptor just in case, it worked for a little while and the laptop froze every time, now it won't even connect with the adaptor). Went rhough hours -literally- of broadband help with Virgin, switched modem on and off, coaxil cable in and out, reboots galore, even tried new ethernet cable and usb cable to connect the modem because it has all the right lights on, and tested laptop at Sony shop for ethernet port malfunction, but it works fine with theirs and other wireless networks. ISP provided by Virgin seemed fine, as well as network settings (they talked me through this, I understand it only a little bit I must add).

The crunch seems to be that when I connect the two little computer screens on the bottom right by the clock show a little 'globe' (there's a better way to describe this, I know!) between them for about a second and then change to a triangular exclamation mark and the nothing.

I would be so grateful for any help, thanks in advance!

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

Connect before you switch on for the first time using the Ethernet and the process will be automatic. I am running vista 64, the only problem you will encounter is Pc Guard is not compatible so you will need your own security software, may I suggest Avast 4.7 antivirals home addition at www.avast.com. I have been using it for 6 months with out any problems. Bob

Re: Vista & Virgin broadband problems.

    Hi

I have had Vista for 13 months and found it great.I am also an original telewest customer now Virgin and havent had any problems.

    Used Ethernet connection.

I did find that Nero would not work so just used another programme.

Also found problems with my HP Scanner. And was informed that there were no new compatble Vista drivers

I really like Vista and its functionality.
