Thinking of reformatting back to XP

I have a new PC that i bought a month before Vista. AMD 64 X2 . My Vista is buggy and will hang randomly several times a day. I like a smooth system and i think I may wait awhile Before puting Vista back on my system. Every program i run is Certified for Vista. Another thing that bothers me is that the anti virus and firewall options for Vista are pretty much junk according to reviews Ive read and this bothers me as well. The navagation in Vista is so much different than Xp and i find it takes a lot longer to find apps than I care to spend.

All new operating systems have teething troubles to start off with. If you think Vista is bad try getting ATI or Nvidia graphics cards running under Fedora Linux. In my experience if you stick with them and slowly troubleshoot the problems, you quickly end up with a stable system and reap the rewards of the vast amount of effort that the creators have lavished on the operating system. You can be sure that all the hardware and software manufacturers will be taking this approach and in a month or two Vista machines will really start showing what they are made of.

Have you considered a complete reinstall of Vista using your recovery disc?  You may just have a buggy install.

As for antivirus, this is a common misconception that Vista comes with a bad antivirus.  Vista does not include antivirus and you should use a seperate AV program - like Avast, which is free to home users.

Tip: easy way to find apps - click start and type the program into the search bar,  you only need the first few letters, then press enter if its top of the search list, it will open it.

My guess is that random hangs are to do with some 3rd party driver or software, rather than Vista itself.

Try booting into safe mode (I think its F5 when first starting up computer) and try a few reboots from within safe mode.  If it is not hanging then you know its not Vista but either a driver or software.

Have you checked the error log in Vista?  This can be valuable in telling you possible causes of problems, but you may need help deciphering codes.  Go to start and search for Event Viewer, this may help you find the source of the problems.

Re: Thinking of reformatting back to XP

As beckyh said use the error logging in Vista, it is vastly superior to the one found in XP, I have numerous errors caused by my Realtek audio driver crashing the control panel, other than that problem my Vista install is rock solid.

Once you get used to the interface in Vista you will hate going back to XP, I have a dual boot Vista/XP system and only find myself going back to XP for some of the more stubborn programs refusing to run.

Difficult to tell without knowing what the errors are.

Can you post again with the errors expanded?
